pounds 180m to help build homes

Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), Sept 29, 2009

HOUSING Minister John Healey has challenged Tyneside councils to tap into an pounds 180m fund to build new council homes.

Speaking to The Chronicle, Mr Healey said the new pot of cash would build on an existing pounds 140m national programme, which is helping pay for dozens of new council homes in the region.

That includes 27 houses on Sheridan Road, Hedgeley Road and Brancepeth Road in South Tyneside. Speaking about the new contractors pacific palisades scheme, Mr Healey said: “It means for the North East what the North East councils make of it. The invitation and challenge is there for councils in the North East.

“We are putting Government funding on the table because we want to build the homes that people need. We want to create the jobs that help keep people in work and we want councils to play a bigger part in building the affordable homes that we need in the future.

“I want to see North East councils take up this challenge, take up this funding, match it and do their bit.”

He also said councils would need to have apprenticeship schemes and local job recruitment in place to access the cash

Extreme Laundry: The Latest Laundry Trends

Kitchen & Bath Design News, Sep 2008 by Peterson, Mary Jo

The cost and complexity of the laundry room continues to evolve, so it seems important to look at a few of the latest trends in the parts, pieces and design of this significant space.

At our “Luxury Kitchen Trends” presentation at the International Builders Show in February, I listened to my fellow speaker, CKD Connie Edwards, discuss the incredible design opportunities related to the expanding role of the laundry room in the home.

The Kitchen/Bath Industry Show in April also showcased a huge variety of laundry appliance features, both aesthetic and performance related, and Design Idea Center included concepts in the laundry area focusing on a variety of functions beyond simply the tasks of washing and drying dirty clothes.

My friendly appliance expert, CKD Mary Jo Camp, tells me that prices for the washer and dryer today run from $600 at the low end to $3,500 for a pair of front-loaders on pedestals with steam features. In these appliances can go as high as $6,500 for certain little giants or $24,000 for the commercial pair offered to the few “extreme launderers.”

Call me old-fashioned, but I’d still say these costs are noteworthy. They make a statement about the value of the laundry function to today’s consumers, and, as a result, the changing role of this space in the home from a design standpoint. We are looking at much more than a laundry room in today’s designs there’s a lot more going on in this space than just cleaning clothing so it seems a good time to mention some of the design ideas and considerations I’m finding.

CLEVER SOLUTIONS

Design considerations for the laundry space have changed, and that means we as designers must be thinking outside the box to devise clever solutions to address our clients’ primary needs and concerns. In particular, work and storage space are becoming increasingly important components of the laundry area.

While I have long been a proponent of the elevated washer/ dryer, our firm is finding many people will still opt for the standard height or front loaders with the ability to design a standard counter above them, increasing the space for folding, sorting and storing clothes prior to their return to the dressing areas of their owners.

Several of the front loaders allow for the removal of the top of the appliances to accommodate a counter finishing at the standard 36″ height.

When designed this way, access to shut-offs should be planned in an adjacent base cabinet or in an otherwise easily accessible area. Maintaining at least 48″ in front of the machines provides for clearance around the door swings and for improved access for the variety of users.

The traditional laundry tub seems less critical than in years’ past, but at least one sink for hand washing and possibly a second for auxiliary activities such as potting plants or arranging flowers seems popular – a dirty sink and a clean one, specifically.

Traditional storage of laundry detergents and aids has been next to or above the appliances. A favorite new concept for me as well is the pedestal that houses a drawer for such detergents, dispensing the proper amount as communicated by the washer, eliminating the need to lift and haul those heavy bottles. Other laundry aids are still best stored next to rather than above – the appliances, and cabinet accessories are available to make this storage easy to access.

We know the laundry room has risen from the basement, but statistics show a pretty equal division between locating the laundry near the kitchen/social center, and the bedrooms where much of the laundry is generated. Many appliance manufacturers have accommodated these preferences by creating machines that run more quietly than ever before. Even so, sound insulation in the walls should be planned to minimize the noise factor.

It is worth mentioning that multiple laundries are no longer rare – and many clients will choose to locate one in each of these preferred locations to maximize convenience

Service members encouraged to purchase renters insurance

Service members encouraged to purchase renters insurance

All Hands, Sept, 2006 by Steven Donald Smith

With hurricane season in full-swing, military officials are encouraging service members who don’t own their own homes to purchase renters insurance to protect their personal property.

“Hurricane season is now upon us. We urge you, particularly if you live in an area prone to nature’s fury, to examine how prepared you are to protect your family financially,” Air Force Secretary Michael W. Wynne stated in a recent letter to Airmen regarding personal financial management.

Wynne said one of the lessons learned from the 2005 hurricane season is that it’s important to assess insurance needs sooner rather than later.

“Too many of our teammates, including retirees, were caught unprepared and now are bearing an avoidable financial burden,” he said. “All [service] members, whether living on base or off, should consider their family’s needs for adequate personal property [renters] insurance.”

Wynne said [service members] should make a detailed inventory of their personal property and also should consider purchasing flood insurance, which is not part of standard homeowner or renter insurance policies. “Chance favors the prepared,” he said.

As a result of hurricanes in 2005, Coast Guard members living in government housing filed more than 650 personal property claims totaling almost $700,000 in damages. The amount paid via the Coast Guard claims process is typically a fraction of the actual cost to replace damaged items, Coast Guard officials said.

Insurance providers such as GEICO and USAA also strongly recommend service members get renters insurance. Most policies cover renters of all types, including those living in apartments, dorms or base housing.

“Renters insurance has become a high priority communication for senior military leaders,” Michael Kelly, USAA executive director of military communications, said. “In addition, the Navy is now requiring those occupying military housing to sign a form stating they were advised of the need for renters insurance prior to occupying military housing.”

Renters insurance is relatively inexpensive compared to the amount of property that could be lost due to severe weather, said Judy Davis, director of GEICO’s homeowners sales department. Davis also pointed out that most renter policies are easily transferable from state to state with a simple phone call

Vegetarians, vegans have a few fast-food choices

0 Comments | Gazette, The (Colorado Springs), Jan 28, 2005 | by DEB ACORD THE GAZETTE

By its nature, the fast-food industry is designed to appeal to the masses. In this country, the masses are meat-eaters.

In a 2000 poll sponsored by the Vegetarian Resource Group, just 4.5 percent of Americans said they never eat meat, poultry or fish.

But vegetarians and their stricter counterparts, vegans, like to eat out, too, and what would life be without the convenience of the drivethrough?

We looked at the most popular fast-food outlets in town and discovered there aren’t many choices.

Strict vegetarians not only have to avoid the obvious (bacon double cheeseburgers are definitely out), but also watch for hidden ingredients, such as “beef flavor” or gelatin. Vegans have to go one step fur- ther, making sure they don’t get any foods with eggs or dairy products.

Here are a few fast-food options we found for vegans

Volkswagen’s new GTI can please every driver.(AUTO WEEKEND)

0 Comments | Washington Times, The, March, 2007

Byline: Nick Yost, SPECIAL TO THE WASHINGTON TIMES You can buy a lot of nice new cars for about $25,000. Safe, reliable and built to last for many years, these average-price automobiles generally come equipped with most of the amenities that American motorists have come to consider essential automatic transmission, air conditioning, multispeaker audio system, power assists for steering and brakes, and even remote locking doors.

What many of them don’t have, however, is the ability to excite and delight. They tend to be antiseptic, soulless devices designed primarily for buyers who see the automobile not as an instrument of pleasure, but as a necessary annoyance that gets them from Point A to Point B. No muss

Showers Above the Clouds

By Spencer Rumsey

Emirates Airlines made history this week by launching flights with showers for first-class passengers on its first Airbus A380 service, proving that no matter what the weather is outside, luxury travelers have never had it better. The airline has raised the bar for air traveler, now they can eat, sleep and shampoo to their hearts’ content.

The Dubai-based carrier unveiled the new shower-spas as it officially took delivery of its A380 in Hamburg on Monday. For the 14 privileged passengers in first-class there will be two inflight showers located at the front of their cabin on the upper deck. They also have a lounge, bar and recline-able seats the size of a single bed, reminiscent of the first PanAm Boeing 747 service launch in 1970.

First class and business class passengers have the entire upper deck of the aircraft for themselves. “Having pioneered on-board private suites,” boasts the airline in its brochure, “we now introduce the next generation of suites in first class, signifying a new era of opulence and indulgence that can only be associated with modern day private jet travel.”

The airline reportedly needs “500 kilos” of water to keep the showers flowing, adding about 25 percent to the weight of the plane, according to Tim Clark, the president of Emirates. He said the shower-spas are a “masterpiece” of engineering. How long the hot water will last remains to be seen. Passengers get only five minutes to shower. A panel inside the stalls changes colors to tell them how much time is left. If it turns yellow, they better rinse. Another ticklish point is how the crew will handle passengers in mid-stream, so to speak, in case they need to buckle down suddenly because of turbulence.

Emirates is the second airline to deploy the Airbus A380-the world’s largest passenger jet. Singapore Airlines took delivery of its fifth A380 earlier this summer (19 are on order) and says that its new double-decker aircraft are averaging nearly 80 percent capacity. It plans to use its new A380 on flights to Beijing for the Olympics. Three of its superjumbos already fly daily from Singapore to Sydney and London. Heathrow, already the world’s most congested airport, is slated to become the world’s top A380 hub with service from 90 of the superjumbos by 2020. The plane’s technological prowess allows it to carry more passengers farther and at 20% less cost than its competitors
