HARRIET Harman is to face prosecution after allegedly crashing her car while on a mobile phone.
Witnesses claimed that although Labour’s deputy leader stopped briefly after hitting the parked vehicle, she drove off without leaving details of her insurance or her car’s registration.
But she will only be prosecuted for the driving offences, rather than leaving the scene, which could have left her with a possible six-month jail term. When approached, she is alleged to have told a witness: ‘I’m Harriet Harman … you know where you can get hold of me.’ The 59-year-old is said to have struck the car in her constituency of Peckham, South East London, in July.

Earlier this month Miss Harman, who is also Leader of the Commons, was questioned by police about the incident and a file was sent to the Crown Prosecution Service.
Yesterday the CPS announced there was enough evidence to prosecute her.
She will be summonsed to court by police, a method of bringing someone before a court without formally charging them.
She is accused of driving without due care and attention and while using a hand-held mobile telephone.
Miss Harman, a former Solicitor General, could face a fine of [pounds sterling]6,000 and up to 12 points on her licence if found guilty of the driving offences, which she strongly denies. Magistrates could also ban her from driving.
The married mother of three already has three points on her licence for speeding in 2007.
The incident is a major embarrassment for the Labour Party, which brought in the law to punish motorists holding a phone while behind the wheel in 2003.
Prosecutors and road safety campaigners have argued in the past that those found guilty of the offence should be jailed.
Yesterday the CPS issued a statement saying: ‘The Crown Prosecution Service has decided there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest to prosecute the Rt Hon Harriet Harman MP for the offences of driving without due care and attention and driving whilst using a handheld mobile telephone in relation to an incident on July 3, 2009 in Peckham, London.
‘The Metropolitan Police Service provided papers to the CPS on November 9, 2009, which were reviewed by the Special Crime Division in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors.’ Miss Harman was banned from driving for seven days and fined [pounds sterling]400 after admitting speeding at 99mph on the M4 near Swindon, Wiltshire, in January 2003.
She was also fined [pounds sterling]60 and given three penalty points for going 50mph in a temporary 40mph speed limit on the A14 near Ipswich in April 2007.
When she failed to pay the [pounds sterling]60 fixed penalty notice within a 28-day limit, she narrowly avoided being hauled back before court.
But her summons to South East Suffolk Magistrates Court was withdrawn by prosecutors after she paid up at the 11th hour.
Yesterday a spokesman for Miss Harman, who lives in Herne Hill in South London but also has a house in Suffolk, said: ‘Miss Harman strongly refutes the allegations and will deny the charges.’ A spokesman for the road safety campaign Roadpeace said: ‘I cannot comment on this particular case.
‘But certainly driving whilst on a mobile phone is very dangerous.
People should understand that it’s illegal for a good reason.’ r.camber@dailymail.co.uk

BANGALORE: India’s small wonder, the Tata Nano, will drive into Bangalore at an entry price of Rs 1,55,997 (for the standard version).
That’s right. After adding all the charges like insurance, road tax, handling and registration, value-added tax and the logistics costs, the dream car will be 56% more expensive than its perceived price tag of Rs 1 lakh.
But take heart. Even at that price, the standard version of the Nano is 31% cheaper – and the top end version, the Nano LX – is 5% cheaper than the standard version of the Maruti 800, whose on-road price in Bangalore is Rs 2,23,115.
The Nano’s standard version is also 11% cheaper than a two-stroke autorickshaw

Experts with the California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers say:
— Check the garden to make sure young trees and rose trees are securely staked and frost-sensitive plants have been moved to protected areas.
— If one of the plants in your garden is diseased and needs to be removed don’t add it to the compost bin. Disinfect your pruning tools after each cut so you don’t spread the disease further.
— Feeding your lawn now will keep it greener during the cool weather.

CapRock Communications, a provider of communications to remote environments, announced a long-term agreement with Statoil to provide satellite communications to a new drillship.
Norwegian-based Statoil, an international energy company focused on upstream oil and gas operations, will use the services to support its onboard crew for the duration of its drilling campaign in the Gulf of Mexico.
The company explained that while operating in some of the deepest waters hundreds of miles offshore, a reliable communications solution is critical to maintaining peak performance conditions as well as connectivity with those back onshore. CapRock stated that its fully managed VSAT solution – complete with network design, equipment and installation and 24/7 network monitoring and management – will enable Statoil’s onboard personnel to experience voice and data communications similar to the corporate office. Crew members will be able to share data with onshore experts – enabling them to collaborate and make real-time decisions necessary for operations to continue running smoothly.
And with CapRock backhauling the communications traffic to some of the client’s shore-based locations, Statoil experts will be able to remotely manage some of the offshore operations from their desks which will lower travel.
“Statoil demonstrates a level of excellence in its drilling operations and we are honored to have been selected to meet that same level of excellence with our communication services,” said CapRock Vice President and Managing Director, EMEA, Eduardo Correa. “This award is testament to CapRock’s proven track record of reliability and quality of service, and we look forward to further broadening our relationship with Statoil.”

I haven’t slept since my friend Stephen died, the grief is just crushing me

RONAN Keating says he has not slept properly since Stephen Gately died and is thinking about getting counselling to help him cope with his grief.
The 32-year-old Boyzone star spoke out just over a month after the sudden death of his bandmate to say that he suffers panic attacks and regularly feels ‘crushed’ by grief.
And he admitted that even the death of his mother Marie from breast cancer 11 years ago did not prepare him for the hammer blow of his friend’s passing.

In an interview published yesterday, Keating said: ‘I just feel worn out. I haven’t slept. My brain doesn’t work. My heart’s broke. You just feel crushed. I’ve had good days and bad days.’ The bad days, he said, are ‘horrible’ – explaining: ‘You can’t breathe, you feel like your chest is collapsing, the walls are coming in on top of you. Anxiety, I think, is what they call it.
‘I haven’t been sleeping at all lately. It’s been horrible. We’ve all been feeling the same since Stephen passed. Mentally, I’m absolutely exhausted.’ The father of three continued: ‘I’ve never before thought about going to get help with counsellors.
For the first time ever, I think I should.
‘When I lost my mam, it was the hardest thing at the time I’d ever known in my life – but, because she was sick for two years and we were told three months before she died that she had three months left, subconsciously you build a wall, your defence mechanism goes that. Whereas with Steo, there was nothing, just this wall of devastation, shock.
‘I don’t think it has hit any of us properly. There’s times when you feel like you can’t breathe, you know, when you’re panicking, and social anxiety treatment I’m not like that. I’ve always been on a level.’ Gately, 33, was found curled up on a couch in his holiday home in Majorca on October 10. A postmortem examination found that he died of a pulmonary oedema – a build-up of fluid on the lungs.
Around 3,500 fans lined the streets of Dublin’s north inner city for his funeral. As well as singing with the remaining Boyzone members at the funeral, Keating also delivered a eulogy to his friend. Yesterday, he told how he was in America when he received the news of Gately’s death.
Keating was due to run the Chicago marathon for charity the following day and was having dinner with his sister in a restaurant when the call came.
‘I bawled my eyes out. Screamed down the phone, “What are you saying?” I couldn’t take it in.
‘When the guy on the phone said “Stephen passed away”, I said, “Stephen who?” because I thought he was talking about someone else. I just did not think it would be Steo. I’ll never forget it.
‘I ran out of the restaurant, my sister ran after me with my coat, saying, “What’s wrong, what’s wrong?”.
‘I told her. And then I had to call the three guys. Bloody hell, what a call
